DC Senior Advisory Coalition Meeting Minutes

 SAC Coordinator Introduction and Co-Chair Search Update

Membership Presentations

1.Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE)- Linda Popejoy, Manager, Systemic Reform. The LCE is the largest provider of legal services to seniors in the District. Some resources provided by the LCE= hotline, consumer protection, public benefits, veterans advocacy project.

W.H asked what the income guidelines are for individuals. L.P responded 200% of the poverty line/25,000 for an individual.

M.A suggested that legal support for groups should be introduced into the resources.

2. So Others Might Eat (SOME)- Betty Gentle.SOME provides geriatric case management, stabilization services, socialization, and housing.

 P.S asked how many employees the organization has. B.D responded with approximately 400.

K.B asked what the income guidelines are for individuals. B.G responded <1,900 a     month.

A.S questioned if SOME provides transportation to hearings. B.G will ask and get back.

3. Yellow Cab Company of DC-Christopher Grayton.

Yellow Cab has taken over Seabury. Company provides the following services: wheelchair accessible vehicles at no extra charge; vet-rides to seniors and free rides to employment services; TransportDC which provides the option of a pool-ride, 911 Nurse Triage in which a taxi is called if it is not an emergency; Angel Tree Program in which rides are given to low-income families to pick up donates gifts; and Senior MedExpress Program in which seniors are driven to essential life-sustaining appointments for free.

FY20 Budget Discussion & Planning

The Coalition agreed that the priorities need to involve community input. J.L prompted that the Coalition needs to look at Age-Friendly Initiative Budget. A scorecard should be made to see what was funded and what was not. The Coalition will work with the Fair Budget Coalition to get representatives into their committees.
